Every few weeks, I will be recommending some valuable reading for business owners, along with a memorable quote from the book.
Your business can only progress at the rate at which you, as leader, are growing your own competence. The highest achievers are those who are constantly learning.
So if you aren’t currently reading a book – pick one up!
The Ultimate Blueprint for an Insanely Successful Business
Are you a business operator or a business owner? One gets tired, and the other gets rich – and this book explains how to be the latter rather than the former.
The Ultimate Blueprint for an Insanely Successful Business by Keith J. Cunningham
This is a book designed for the ‘busy’ business owner. The tired business owner. The business owner who feels a little bit like their business is running them rather than the other way around.
The book isn’t new, nor does it really share a super revolutionary method of running a great business. It’s a reminder of those critical things that every business owner must do if they want to run a long-term successful business.
Measure and monitor the things you want done – because what you focus on is what gets managed.
If you’re running a business and want to start making it the kind of business that runs itself – this is a book for you!
Memorable Quote from The Ultimate Blueprint for an Insanely Successful Business
You have a choice … Look good or get rich. The “pimp factor” – it happens when you pimp your business like rock stars pimp their ride. The question is: Does the money you’re investing or spending produce a return? Is that $1000 ergonomic chair going to produce more sales?
– Keith J. Cunningham

The book I’m highlighting in this week’s blog is all about what to do when you’ve reached that so-called ‘final’ level of success, and are now wondering where to direct your skills and energy…
Halftime by Bob Buford
If you are running a business, I am sure you are familiar with the consistent drive required to achieve each next level of growth. You may be familiar with the stages of success, and you have probably been hiking your way up that pyramid already.
What happens when you reach the top? What happens when you’ve built a highly systemised business that runs efficiently and profitably without your ongoing effort and input?
It is at this point that Halftime comes into play: you start to change your direction from chasing success to becoming significant.
Bob Buford’s framework can give you a bit of clarity on how to continue your personal ascent after you have achieved classical success. No matter what stage you are at with your business, I recommend this book to ignite your inspiration for the legacy you want to create and become.
As you grow your business, as you systemise and develop it, you too are growing and becoming something greater. You are nurturing the ingredients within yourself that will let you give back to the world once you have reached the top.
Be ready for the time when you achieve all the success you dream of… because there’s still more!
Memorable Quote from Halftime
The feeling of being hurried is not usually the result of living a full life and having no time. It is, on the contrary, born of a vague fear that we are wasting our life. When we do not do the one thing we ought to do, we have no time for anything else – we are the busiest people in the world.
– Bob Buford
A Coach Speeds Things Up
Everyone’s path to success and significance is different. Some take the long and winding route, learning from their own mistakes. Others take the short and sharp way to the top, leveraging collective intelligence and skills.
The difference can just be in having a coach. Let us know a little bit about your business and your goals, then have a quick chat with us and find out if you could be getting to your Halftime sooner rather than later.Book a Free Coaching Call
The book I’m recommending this time is not just a business book, it’s a fable that’s jam-packed with powerful philosophy and ideas for life and business.
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Alchemist follows a man seeking out a treasure he saw in a dream. He goes on a journey of discovery, learning about his Personal Legend and the Soul of the World along the way. And after his long and arduous travels, he ends up returning to where he began, finding the treasure he had dreamt about was there at home all along.
There is no summary in the world that does the story justice. Its composition is incredibly unique as it carries you on this journey of learning and understanding with the hero of the story. It should be read as it is told.
For business owners there are many takeaways – celebrating the good things that happen with every sunrise; understanding the present is the key to improving the future; nothing in this world is ever perfect.
But one of the most important lessons I think is that you should never let fear stop you from chasing the goals and heights that you desire. That fear itself is worse than any suffering found when you chase your dreams
Memorable Business Quote from The Alchemist
The fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself… no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.
– Paulo Coelho
Goals are dreams with timelines
The problem with chasing dreams is that sometimes you can be enthusiastically running the wrong direction.
Channel your dreams into clear, defined goals. Set timelines. Achieve them. This is at the core of how business coaching helps business owners truly achieve the things they personally want.

Outwitting the Devil
This book takes an understanding of humans from thousands of interviews and distils it into a mythical conversation to highlight some principles for taking life by the devil’s horns…
Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hill wrote this imagined interview with “the Devil” back in 1938, shortly after publishing his continually relevant Think and Grow Rich. However, this was a time when using religious iconography in such a creative manner may have been a bit too controversial. It was therefore only posthumously published in 2011.
And yet, it is still as meaningful and powerful in today’s day and age for anyone who prioritises self-mastery.
Hill writes the book as an interview with the “root of all evil” – whether you want to consider that the literal Devil, some invisible force, or a part of our own minds, it doesn’t really matter. He uses this imagined conversation to explain how you can either succumb to becoming a drifter or you can take charge of your own destiny. And he explains how to do it.
This creative piece of writing is an enjoyable way to digest some fundamental principles that all business owners should keep in mind.
While the Devil aims to make you into a drifter, the most successful business owners are the ones who take control of their own thoughts and thus their whole lives.
It’s a fantastic read and a timeless insight into human behaviour that I highly recommend.
Memorable Business Quote from Outwitting the Devil
Analyze temporary defeat, no matter of what nature or cause, and extract from it the seed of an equivalent advantage
– Napoleon Hill

How to Win Friends and Influence People
There are some books that teach you about specific business concepts and become very technical and teach you nitty-gritty specifics that are only relevant to business owners.
Then there are some books that give you an education in fundamental social concepts that will make you a better leader by improving your skills holistically.
This book is the latter.
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
How to Win Friends and Influence People was written in 1936, but it’s as relevant now as it was then and it still makes the book charts in this decade.
That’s because Dale Carnegie hones down on a fundamental human feature that won’t change anytime soon: social signals.
Centred around honesty, sincerity, and genuine behaviours – this book is a good reminder for any business owner on how to best interact with those around them. Whether that is your team, your suppliers, your prospects or even your competitors.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There
You’ve fought with blood, tears, and sweat to build your business. You’re finally reaching a level of stability now it’s time for growth.
However, as you approach that pinnacle of greater success, you’ll find the improvements you need to make are quite different from the technical mastery you’ve had to pursue so far.
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith
This book is evergreen in the principles. If you’ve read it before, read it again: every business leader needs to ingest these ideas and internalise them.
The bottom line is that as your responsibility within your business increases, the skills you need to work on will need to shift. Interpersonal skills and behavioural issues are where you need to turn your attention.
Foster a sense of gratitude, learn how to give undivided attention, speak impeccably and take responsibility for your mistakes. If you want to be the best leader you can be, then you need to you not just understand these things, you need to live and breathe them.
Memorable Business Quote from What Got You Here Won’t Get You There
People will do something – including changing their behaviour – only if it can be demonstrated that doing so is in their own best interests as defined by their own values.
– Marshall Goldsmith

Does your business require you to sell something? No matter what level you’re playing at right now, this book spells out 3 fundamentals that will help you win those home runs.
Pitch Anything by Oren Klaff
This one is a book that will take your persuasion to the next level. Whether that’s to help your sales team improve their process, to get your loan for expansion approved, or to help you convey your vision to your organisation – this book is going to give you that extra edge.
There are three basic lessons Klaff runs you through:
- Make sure your pitch speaks to the most basic level of the human brain – which he calls the ‘croc brain’. This is similar to Seth Godin’s ‘lizard brain’ or Steve Peters’s ‘chimp brain’. It’s the instinctual part of our brains – the fight or flight mode.
Focus on the simplest of features and results, not the complex parts.
- Be a prize to be won. When you’re convincing someone of something, it’s most convincing if you aren’t trying to convince. You don’t want to be contesting for their business – you want to be in the position of the thing that they want to win.
Get your audience to be justifying why they are valuable to you, and you pull them onto your side of the fence!
- Klaff talks about ‘frames’ – everyone sees the world through their own frame. And the best way to get someone to win with you, is to get them to see through the same frame as yours. So to hedge your bets, throw in as many frames as you can to eventually get them to see you through so many frames, that it triggers their gut instinct that you are the way forward.
People trust their intuition and justify it later, so if you can stack a bunch of frames together that guides their intuition forward, you’ll win their decision.
In business – and in life – if you want something to happen, you have to make it happen, and often with the help of others along the way. Pitch Anything will help you get that help on board with whatever it is you are trying to achieve.
Memorable Business Quote from Pitch Anything
We feel decisions in our body not our mind. Our thought process exactly matches our evolution: First, survival. Then, social relationships. Finally, problem solving.
– Oren Klaff
